What Are Social Media Content Pillars? + How to Create Yours.

Let’s answer your question right off the bat.

What are content pillars?

Content pillars are one of the simplest ways to give your social media strategy some structure without making every post feel exactly the same.

Think of them as the main topics or themes your brand consistently creates content around.

Instead of starting from scratch every time you need to post, your content pillars give you a place to start. That alone can make content creation feel a whole lot less overwhelming.

Let’s Dive Deeper.

A content pillar is a broad topic that your brand regularly talks about on social media.

They’re essentially the categories your content falls into.

For example, a coffee shop might have content pillars like:

Products: new drinks, menu items, customer favorites

👋 People: employees, customers, behind the scenes

📍 Community: local events, partnerships, community involvement

📚 Education: coffee tips, brewing methods, fun facts

😂 Entertainment: memes, trends and relatable coffee content

Now, instead of asking:

“What should I post today?”

They can ask:

“What can I post about our products today?”

That’s a much easier question to answer.

Why Do Content Pillars Matter?

Because your social media shouldn’t feel like a random collection of posts.

You want your audience to understand the who, the what, the why, the where, and the how.

Content pillars help create that consistency. They also make it easier to balance different types of content.

Because if every post is:

“BUY OUR PRODUCT!!!”

…your audience is probably going to get tired of you pretty quickly. 😅

Your content should educate, entertain, connect, inspire + yes, occasionally sell.

Content pillars help you make room for all of it.

How Many Content Pillars Should You Have?

There really isn’t one magic number. But if you’re just getting started, 3–5 content pillars is a great place to begin.

Too few can make your content feel repetitive + too many can make your strategy feel scattered.

Remember: your pillars should be broad enough to give you lots of ideas.

“Tuesday tips” isn’t necessarily a content pillar.

Education is.

“Photos of our employees” isn’t necessarily a content pillar.

People + culture is.

How to Create Your Own Content Pillars

1. Start With Your Business

What do you actually want people to know about your business?

Think about your:

  • Products or services
  • Expertise
  • Team
  • Process
  • Story
  • Values
  • Industry

These are your starting points.

2. Think About Your Audience

Now ask:

What does my audience actually care about?

What questions do they ask?

What problems are they trying to solve?

What do they want to learn?

What entertains them?

What would they share with a friend?

Your content pillars shouldn’t just reflect what you want to talk about.

They should overlap with what your audience wants to hear.

That’s where the magic happens.

3. Consider Your Goals

Every piece of content doesn’t need to sell something.

But your overall content strategy should support your business goals.

Maybe you want to:

📈 Increase awareness
💬 Build community
🎓 Educate your audience
🤝 Build trust
🛍️ Drive sales
🌐 Get more website traffic

Your content pillars should give you opportunities to work toward those goals.

An Example: The Social Dubs

If I were creating content pillars for The Social Dubs, they might look something like:

🏆 Social Media Strategy

Tips, education + insights to help businesses build stronger social strategies.

💡 Content Creation

Ideas, trends, hooks, repurposing, planning + everything that makes creating content easier.

📱 Social Media Trends

Fun trends, platform updates + ways businesses can use what’s happening on social.

🤝 The Social Dubs

Behind the scenes, client wins, services, products + what it’s like to work with us.

😂 Personality + Relatability

Memes, humor, pop culture, working life, small business struggles + the occasional “chronically online girly” moment.

And notice something:

Not every post needs to fit neatly into one box.

Some content can overlap.

That’s okay.

Your content pillars are there to guide your strategy not restrict your creativity.

Final Thoughts

Content pillars won’t magically solve every social media problem.

But they can make one of the biggest problems (figuring out what to post) a lot easier to manage!

Instead of starting with a blank screen, you’ll have a roadmap.

Instead of constantly asking “What should I post?”, you’ll have a list of topics you know your audience cares about.

And instead of creating random pieces of content, you’ll start building a social presence that actually feels connected + is done with purpose.

And around here, purpose + strategy is how we build momentum + secure the next W. 🏆

Until next time,

🤍 Cassidy
